Frederick C. Redfern papers, 1885-1977.

Chiefly personal correspondence of Redfern with his wife, Blanche Myrtle Thompson Redfern, but also including letters re fate of his missing son, Paul Rinaldo Redfern, an aviator who disappeared during an attempted trans-oceanic flight from Brunswick, Georgia, to Brazil in 1927. Includes sermon notes, outlines, miscellaneous articles and other works written by Redfern; minutes, 18 Sept. 1889, from a council meeting of the West Walworth [N.Y.] Baptist Church called in honor of Redfern's ordination to the clergy; Redfern's advocacy of civil rights and education for African Americans brought him widespread recognition, including a letter, 24 Sept. 1935, from President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Washington, D.C.), re the newly enacted Social Security legislation and asking Redfern for assistance in identifying social needs in the African American community in Columbia, S.C. Other materials include: list of birth dates for John Henry Redfern and Emma Cotchefer Redfern and their children (undated manuscript); typescript research paper [1927], entitled "Education Ideals, Progress, and Achievements in the United States," [undated, although copy of this work held by the Rochester Theological Seminary is identified as a 1927 Thesis (B.D.), possibly by a younger relative]; and printed volume, 1894, Outline Studies in English and American Literature, written by J.H. Gilmore and used by Redfern while enrolled at the University of Rochester; and undated typescript guide to conducting interviews and biographical research: Manual for the Collection of Life Histories [2 sheets; 1930s?; possibly issued by the Federal Writers' Project of the Works Project Administration]. Three letters, 31 July 1922 - 10 Dec. 1941, exchanged between Valley Lodge No. 109, Free and Accepted Masons (Rochester, N.Y.) and Richland Lodge No. 39 (Columbia, S.C.), re Masonic committal services and rites conducted in observance of Redfern's death (photocopies); also includes many programs, clippings, broadsides and and other printed materials, including letterhead stationery of Benedict College. Also includes 16 photographs of Frederick C. Redfern, his parents, and various churches in which he served as pastor, including interior and exterior views of Baptist churches in Alexandria, Ohio, and elsewhere.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York. He was the son of James (lawyer, financier) and Sara (Delano) Roosevelt.
